Function
Labels tapes which are not secure, including virgin tapes.
Format
LABEL unit number,magnetic tape description
The unit number is the geographical unit number of the deck on which the tape to be labelled will be loaded.
The magnetic tape description should be in entrant desription format. It need not have an (*MT) qualifier but should contain the serial number of the tape to be labelled. If the tape local name is omitted the tape will be labelled POOL TAPE, but will not be put in the pool, a seperate NEW command being necessary for this purpose. The reel and generation numbers will be set to zero unless otherwise specified.

Execution
The command should be typed on the console before the tape is loaded.
After the command has been issued the message
UNIT n RESERVED
is displayed on the operator's console.
The tape should then be loaded and the deck engaged. The tape is checked to ensure that it does not contain a secure header label and is then labelled as specified in the command. The deck is then unloaded. No access must be made to the tape before it has been unloaded. If no tape is loaded after a deck has been reserved, the deck may be freed by an UNLOAD command. If a tape was already loaded but free when the command was given, it will be unloaded and the deck then reserved.
