ICL 1900 Series George 3 Operating System Commands

REDON (RO)

Function

Simulates a command issued by a specified peripheral or indicates to the Librarian that a special tape or disc is to be loaded or engaged.

Format

  1. Basic Peripherals
        REDON number,command
The first parameter gives the operator's number of the peripheral. The second parameter is the command that is to be obeyed as if it has been issued from this peripheral.

  2. Magnetic Tape
        REDON number,magnetic tape description
number is the geographical number of the deck
magnetic tape description has one of two forms:

  3. Discs
        REDON number,serial number
    or
        REDON number(storage unit),serial number
where number is the geographical number of the device and storage unit is a number from zero upwards indicating the part of the device referred to (if the unit is partitioned). The second format should only be used if the unit referred to contains more than one storage unit.

Forbidden contexts

NOT OPERATOR,REMOTE

Execution

  1. Basic Peripherals
REDON can be used to simulate commands issued from paper tape or card readers. Thus it can be used to identify unheaded paper tape or cards. For example:

        REDON 27,DOCUMENT FRED

will cause GEORGE to identify the paper tape (for example) on device 27 as the document called FRED.

If the peripheral specified is WRONGed a command error is generated.

If the operator's number of a peripheral of any other type is specified, a command error is generated.

  2. Magnetic Tape
The next tape to be loaded on the specified deck will have its first block checked to ensure that it is not a secure tape. In the case of a Xenotape such details are given in the tape description and will be checked against the tape and the tape will be left positioned after the header label. Non-standard tapes will be left positioned at the start of the tape.

When a tape is RETURNed to the pool it will have POOL TAPE written to its header label only if it is already loaded. If a tape is RETURNed when it is not loaded, a request to load the tape will not be generated and the tape will not have POOL TAPE written to its header label.

  3. Discs
The command indicates that the specified unit is non-standard and may be accesses only by a Q or S trusted program using either mode #1600 or mode #1700. In the non-standard device is disengaged, the command does not terminate until the device is engaged.

Examples

REDON 32,(276212X) Prepares for the loading of the Xenotape on deck 32
REDON 31,NEWTAPE(NONSTANDARD) Prepares for the loading of the non-standard tape, to be addressed as NEWTAPE on deck 31
REDON 41(2),#237214 Indicates that the third storage unit on unit 41 is non-standard
