Execution

WHATGENS takes one parameter, an entrant description, and replies with the highest and lowest generation number of entrants matching the description. The reply is 9 characters: the 4-digit highest fgn, a comma, and the 4-digit lowest fgn. Leading zeroes are replaced by spaces. The reply for a multifile is '(fgn of highest element),,1'. If only the top fgn is required, the parameter should include fgn -0 for efficiency.

SETPARAM facilities: The replies can be obtained by new SETPARAM facilities HIGEN(entrant description) and LOGEN(entrant description) respectively.

Worktapes, workfiles and directories are not allowed with this command; nor are qualifiers: thus magnetic tape descriptions, for example, are only handled if no TSN is specified.

Any FGN given is ignored; for example, FILE(2/) or FILE(+3/) do not cause the command to check for the existence of that generation.
