ICL 1900 Series George 3 Operating System Commands

CANTDO (CD)

Function

Informs GEORGE that the operator is unable to implement a system request.

Format

CANTDO system request

The parameter is enough of an extant system request to be unique. System requests are messages output on the operator's console that begin with the word PLEASE. For example, if

    PLEASE LOAD *MT 70310

is a system request, the corresponding CANTDO command is

    CANTDO LOAD *MT 70310

Spaces are not significant in the parameter of the CANTDO command.

Forbidden contexts

NOT OPERATOR

Execution

If the parameter of the command does not identify an extant system request, the error message

z IS NOT AN EXTANT REQUEST

is output on the operator's console.

Otherwise GEORGE will take the alternative action that is standard for the activity that generated the request; for example, it may generate a command error or program failure in the job concerned.

If CANTDO is issued in reply to a system request to engage a basic output device, the device will be WRONGed automatically and the following messages will be output at the operator's console:

    UNIT peripheral description WRONGED
    UNIT peripheral description FREE

The device can be made available for use again by issuing a RIGHT command for it.

Example

CANTDO ENGAGE UNIT 21

Note

The CANTDO command should only be used when inability to implement the request is likely to be permanent. If the operator does not take the action requested and does not issue a CANTDO command, GEORGE will wait until he does, periodically repeating the request on the operator's console.
